A visit to Agra cannot be complete unless one sees the Taj Mahal (The Crown of the World) . This peerless tomb was built by Shahjahan after the the loss of his wife , Mumtaz Mahal, as a token for his great love for her. It ia said that it took twenty years to build , and that twenty thousand men together were employed at one time on the work .

The Taj Mahal is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Side by side there is tall dark trees which grow along the straight path , and fountain play in some places. It is made of white marble . It has many smooth green lawns and many bed of glowing flowers . All these add to the beauty of the Taj .
The Taj itself stands on the bank of of the river Jamuna . It has four tall slender white marble minarets, one in each corner of the platform around it, on which the great tomb stands. When we look at it from a distance , small and delicate like a fairy palace , it looks.
When we come nearer , we can see how large it is. If we go up the marble steps , and stand close to it, the dome seems to sore high up into the blue sky.
Architecture
Taj Mahal is decorated with precious stones and the beautiful scenes of carved marble that look like delicate jeweler’s work in silver. There in front of us is the grave of the beloved queen of Shah Jahan whose love was so great that he had built for her this beautiful and world famous tomb at enormous cost.
It is delightful to see the Taj at any time of the day. It is most wonderful to see the Taj Mahal on full moon. At that time it looks like a building of pearl or a palace made of silver. It looks so bright and delicate that it seems to have been made of white clouds. The gleaming white marble , the black shadow, the dim light, the silence, the sweet scented gardens, all make it wonderful sight to see.
Not carried away by the remembrance that twenty thousand workmen were employed for twenty two years in its construction, that it cost hard upon three crore of rupees and that gems and precious stones came in camel loads from all parts of the earth to furnish the in layers with their material , we are lost in admiration at the glorious beauty of the Taj.
The grandeur of the Taj Mahal despite decades after construction resonates as the most attractive human made tourist spot of the world. The Taj Mahal unveils five major structural components – the Darwaza or the main entrance, the Bageechea or the gardens, the Masjid or Mosque, the Naqqar khana or the Rest house, and the Rauza , the Central museum.

It also reminds us of power of love and how it has set example for the generations. Shah Jahan wished to build something that had never been done before and wished to give the last gift to his wife to whom he loved so much.
Taj opens everyday except friday from 6 AM to 7 PM. The best time to visit the Taj Mahal is from October to February as the weather in Agra remains cool.
